The payment check

Will insurance pay for this?

Give your plan the medicine’s full name and its intended treatment use. An advertised price cannot answer for your plan.

Ask the plan about this medicine and use.

  • Is the medicine on my plan’s drug list?
  • Is this treatment use included?
  • Does payment need advance approval?
  • What records does the prescriber need to send?
  • What is my share of the bill?

Under federal Medicare rules, Part D, its drug benefit, excluded medicines used only for weight loss in September 2026.

CMS, the agency that runs Medicare, says other accepted treatment uses may qualify for Part D coverage, as of September 2026. CMS explanation of coverage uses

In September 2026, a use that Medicare allowed did not guarantee payment. Your plan’s drug list and approval were still needed.

Ask your plan to confirm payment for your exact prescription. Ask what records it needs before it can decide.

Check the temporary Medicare programme separately.

For certain medicines that imitate the body’s signal for regulating blood sugar and hunger, Medicare’s temporary GLP-1 Bridge programme is available in September 2026. CMS Bridge programme details

Eligible people paid a $50 monthly copay, their share of the bill, under terms checked on September 26, 2026.

The programme’s scheduled start is July 1, 2026 and its end is December 31, 2027, according to CMS reporting in September 2026.

In September 2026, Bridge entry required being 18 or older and meeting weight and health rules at the time the medicine was started. CMS eligibility rules

BMI supplies the number for the weight rule; it is calculated using a person’s height and weight.

Ask your clinician to check your number and which rule below applies.

Under September 2026 rules, the BMI threshold was 35 or more, or 30 or more alongside certain conditions affecting the heart, blood pressure or kidneys.

The heart condition was heart failure where the usual share of blood is pumped out with each beat.

The blood-pressure condition meant readings still high despite two blood-pressure medicines.

Kidney disease had to be stage 3a or worse.

Under September 2026 rules, blood pressure exceeded the limit if the top reading was above 140 or the bottom reading was above 90.

A history of heart attack or stroke, pre-diabetes, or symptoms caused by narrowed limb arteries could qualify someone whose BMI was 27 or more.

Blood sugar has risen beyond the normal range in pre-diabetes, without reaching the threshold for a diabetes diagnosis.

Ask the clinician to check the full condition rules in the CMS link.

Drug coverage meeting the programme’s terms was required in September 2026, through either a standalone Part D plan or Medicare Advantage with a drug benefit.

Under September 2026 rules, a 2026 payment for GLP-1 medicine by someone’s Part D plan ruled that person out of the Bridge for that year.

The September 2026 Bridge rules excluded type 2 diabetes. People with that diagnosis instead had to request payment through their Part D drug plan.

Other exclusions involve certain diagnosed sleep and liver conditions, under September 2026 rules.

Ask the prescriber to check all the CMS rules, including the type and stage of any health problem.

Your personal yearly spending limit for Part D drugs excludes payments to the Bridge, under September 2026 terms.

At $50 each month, a full year of Bridge payments would cost you $600 outside that Part D limit, under September 2026 terms.

The September 2026 terms provide no extra help with that copay for people on low incomes and bar adding discount coupons. CMS payment terms

Have your prescriber review every eligibility condition. A headline leaves too much out to settle your eligibility.

Ask about a health spending account.

HSA means health savings account. FSA means flexible spending account. They hold money for medical expenses that is set aside before tax.

The IRS, the U.S. tax agency, allows qualifying weight-treatment expenses tied to a disease diagnosed by a doctor, as of September 2026. IRS medical-expense guidance

Weight-treatment costs just to feel healthier, without treating a disease diagnosed by a doctor, do not qualify under that September 2026 rule.
